Commercial VOC, Vapor Intrusion & Radon Mitigation

Commercial Radon Mitigation and Vapor Intrusion

In addition to residential radon mitigation systems, our team of experienced radon and VOC technicians specialize in commercial radon and vapor intrusion projects as well. Elevated levels of radon gas are an increasing concern in schools, office buildings, churches and other commercial structures. The air pressure within the structure is generally different than the air pressure in the soil beneath the structure. This pressure differential causes the commercial building to “breathe” the radon gas or chemical vapor from beneath the structure, into the structure itself. Furthermore, since buildings are more energy efficient than ever before, these dangerous vapors and/or radon gas begin to accumulate in higher concentrations within the commercial structure.

Our team of commercial radon mitigation specialists and commercial vapor intrusion technicians have years of experience diagnosing these dangerous issues and then addressing the issues through proper barrier and venting techniques.  Our commercial technicians specialize in commercial radon mitigation, commercial vapor intrusion, commercial soil gas mitigation, commercial methane mitigation, and commercial soil vapor mitigation.

Commercial Radon Mitigation

Radon gas is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and the #2 cause of lung cancer overall.  Radon gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless and can only be detected through a proper commercial radon test.  Our radon specialists are very experienced in performing radon tests on commercial structures like schools, churches, office buildings, factories, strip malls, and apartment complexes.  If a commercial radon test yields a result above 4 pCi/L, the EPA and Surgeon General suggest a proper commercial radon mitigation system should be installed.  A proper commercial radon mitigation system should meet EPA suggested guidelines.  Furthermore, proper commercial grade radon fans, and in some cases, larger diameter piping should be used to properly ventilate radon from beneath larger commercial structure footprints.  Lifetime Radon Solutions is your one-stop shop for both commercial radon testing and commercial radon mitigation.

Commercial Vapor Intrusion

Commercial vapor intrusion occurs when vapor-forming, subsurface chemicals enter the commercial structure through cracks, crevices, drain systems or other migration points in the slab or foundation of the building.  Chemicals in the groundwater, soil, drain lines, and sewers may threaten the indoor air quality of the structure.  Some of the more common vapor-forming chemicals include:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) like trichloroethylene and benzene
  • Certain semi-volatile organic compounds like naphthalene
  • Elemental Mercury
  • Certain polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides

In many cases, it is extremely important to properly mitigate these hazardous vapors because they may accumulate in the structure and cause potential near-term safety hazards like explosions or acute health effects to occupants within the dwelling.  Furthermore, if high levels of accumulation are not present, but lower concentrations of vapor-forming chemicals are still detected, the main concern is whether the vapor-forming chemicals may pose an otherwise avoidable health risk after long-term exposure to these lower concentrations.  Lastly, some commercial cleaning products, gasoline, or other commonly used solvents may pose separate, or in combination with vapor intrusion, significant human health risks after chronic exposure.

Lifetime Radon Solutions will work alongside your health and safety team, environmental consultant, or as a separate, third party consultant to help you properly mitigate these potentially hazardous vapors before they enter the commercial structure.
